Super Fruits For Jiu Jitsu

We are always told daily to eat our fruits and vegetables for a healthy lifestyle. But there are so many different kinds, which do I eat? Which ones have the best of what I need for the amount of energy I put out daily. Especially in the sport of Jiu Jitsu, energy and recovery are very important elements when training and stressing your body daily. Without either, you can’t properly train to develop the skills needed to be a successful grappler. So which fruits are the best for me? and where can I get them?


Mangosteen: A rather uncommon fruit that you won’t find in your everyday super market, Mangosteen is sought out for its anti-oxidants, as are most fruits. The difference being all the wonderful benefits that us as jiu jitsu players seek to have. The first of which is building a stronger immune system. Constantly being in an enclosed area with people sweating, coughing, sneezing, etc.. and then grappling them, you’re bound to catch something. Maintaining this fruit in your diet can ensure a lower risk of sickness. Along with that, comes mental support and improved joint flexibility, a huge asset to ones jiu jitsu game.

Noni: As we all know, a huge reason why a lot of students who start jiu jitsu don’t continue past 6 months, is due to injuries. For a combat athlete noni juice can help the recovery process. For many years noni has been praised for its ability to relieve pain. Combined with pain relief, noni juice also utilizes a very unique anti inflammatory effect that reduces the swelling of damaged tissues.

Acai: Acai, probably the most well known and popular fruit made famous by the Gracie Family, has no different health benefits than most. It is very high in anti oxidants, even more so than cranberry, raspberry, blackberry, strawberry, or blueberry. I myself have included this in my diet, but only PURE acai from my friends at Genesis Today. What I personally enjoy is the high energy levels it gives me at the beginning of my day before rigorous training. There are a lot of great recipes for smoothies using the acai, which Rener Gracie shows one called The Amazon Apple.

No Gi ( Grappling ) Kimura For Triangle , Leandro Brassoloto

This is an awesome setup for the triangle! Very sneaky, and makes for a beautiful chain. Going to run a workshop on this in the gym and see what else I can come up with. Come down to 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Van Nuys and drill this with me!

10th Planet Van Nuys’ Danny “D boy” Pena Goes 4-1 @ Normandie Casino!

10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Van Nuys‘ standout Danny Pena wins tonight @ Normandie Casino in dominant fashion! Scoring a unanimous decision victory Pena, an outstanding wrestler, took down and pounded is opponent round after round stealing the judges score cards. Although Danny is also a very technical boxer and not afraid to stay in the pocket and duke it out, he was able to dictate where the fight went, letting his skills shine. “D boy” is definitely an up and coming prospect in MMA who looks forward to making his pro debut this year and destroying all in his weight class!
We commend you Danny! Great job!

Thor Skancke Wrestling Clinic A Success!

Takedowns, takedowns, takedowns! The sounds of bodies hitting the mat echoed throughout the gym as Thor Skancke payed a visit to 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Van Nuys sharing his wrestling knowledge for MMA and Jiu Jitsu. Even students from 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Riverside came by to polish up their takedowns with the master himself. It was a great fun filled environment with everyone eager to sprawling and smashing. From setups to finishes, Thor covered all the essential movements from the clinch game, building a structure of takedowns flowing into each other so that ultimately the fight ends up on the ground where we flourish. We want to thank Thor Skancke for stopping by with us and showing us an awesome time and how amazing wrestling can be! Can’t wait for another clinic!

10th Planet Jiu Jitsu: Basic Kimura from Guard

In this video, my training partner Gabe Calvento and I show a very fundamental movement in the Kimura. We’re going over this Kimura from full guard, when our opponent makes the mistake of putting their hands on the mat, we act fast and take their arm for the shoulder lock.
